Floating through the abysmal cosmos, Capt. Fred Stewart longed for the safety of his ship, the warmth of his home, Earth, and the embrace of his loving family, whom he would never see again. Communications with the homebase had been permanently severed and his oxygen was steadily charging toward zero percent. But with his last ounces of strength he propelled himself toward the floating bag of freeze-dried Denny’s, sucking the last of his air, tiring his atrophying muscles. For Captain Fred Stewart had made one promise to himself: if he was going to die, he would go out while eating something delicious.
And he did.

I have a weird request I'm hoping you can help me with. There used to be a commercial during the 90s for an Akira VHS that seemed like it was on all the time, and the tagline "MAKES BLADERUNNER LOOK LIKE DISNEY LAND" is burned into my mind. I was thinking maybe you knew it too?

animenostalgia:

I remember this commercial, actually! I believe it was either by Streamline or Orion, and I’m pretty sure it featured an 800 number and mailing address so you could mail-order the VHS if you couldn’t find it in stores. (This was a pretty common way to get anime back in the 90s—most anime companies had a mail-order catalog or mailing list, since a lot of mainstream video stores were still iffy on carrying “Japanimation”.) The “Makes Blade Runner look like Disney Land!” quote was apparently from a reviewer—I can’t remember who, Google seems to think it was Roger & Ebert, but I’m not sure.
Unfortunately, for all the times it seems to have been on cable (I’m positive it was on Sci-Fi channel, some people say it was also on late-night Cartoon Network, but I myself can’t remember that for sure.) it doesn’t look like a copy of that particular commercial is anywhere on Youtube. You’d think that someone would’ve gotten a copy of it while recording some random Sci-Fi channel stuff, but if anyone has, they haven’t uploaded it yet.
Internet, if you happen to find this old commercial, do us all a favor and try to share it, will ya?

There has to be another True 90z Kid out there who uploaded this. Someone put up that fucking air conditioner commercial…
